The civil rights movement was a movement for the equal rights for african americans in the United States. Bernice Johnson Reagon played a huge role in the civil rights movement because her and the Freedom singers they are known as accomplished so much. They sang songs about equal rights and about how blacks are treated so much differently than whites. Music played a role in the movement because it brought people together and helped to form a basis for the people to show their frustrations through the songs. In Bernice Johnson Reagons essay she tells about how to think about frredom songs and why they are important. She says that people cant just sit in the background when they are in the civil rights movement they need to join in instead of just being in the background.
Freedom songs are songs that brought together people through the almost church like feel of the songs. They were songs about freedom and they expressed the blacks frustrations with being treated differently than whites. Freedom songs took place in churches or during protests anywhere where people gathered to talk about the oppression they were enduring. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oNcmrhoZvI "This Little Light of Mine" and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9P1s2_fpfM "Freedom Medley"
The legacy of the Freedom songs and the Civil rights movement will forever live on in history because it is a major part American history. Therefore the songs for example will always be on places like youtube because they are so meaningful to different groups of people. The legacy will forever be in history and history will tell of Freedom singers and freedom songs and how they helped the civil rights movement. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2sYIIjS-cQ&feature=related. There are many important issues in the American Labor Movement and two of the biggest were the harsh working conditions and the low wages. These two main issues saw much attention from singers for the labor movement such as Joe Glazer. Other people such as Joe Hill fought for workers rights in the unions trying to mobilize workers together to fight for better working conditions and better pay. Joe Hill fought to unite workers through song because with song it fires people up with different emotions this and Joe Hill's words brought many people together in unions to fight for their rights. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8Kxq9uFDes. The first video about I saw Joe Hill last night was written by Paul Robeson and this song helped to bring people together in the union because it used the prestige that Joe Hill had built up as a leader and used it to keep uniting people for the cause.
Music in the American Labor Movement functioned by helping people realize that they were being treated badly and that they need to fight for there rights as workers. Music was also used to express what they were feeling and why they were picketing the factories when they were on strike. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaQ7qWo6120. This video is very relevant to the American Labor Movement because he wrote songs specifically for different occupations such as coal miners, steel workers, etc. His hard work help out greatly in all areas of the labor movement because it brought people together under one cause and showed every American what they were striking for.
The song I chose for Joe Hill is called "The Tramp" its about a guy who is a tramp and he cant find work so he just keeps on walking. No one will give him a job because he looks bad like a drifter plus he has to worry about going to jail and he couldn't even get into heaven after he died. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3eluvaNu2mw&feature=related. This is a good song for the labor movement because it shows that people want to work but they need to make good wages otherwise people will think they are the tramp and cant find any work or anything. This song is still relevant for today because it shows people they don't want to be poor they need to work and not look like tramps because you will be poor and cant find work.

Diversity is very important in a 21st century community because with this diversity it helps for people to understand people from other countries and their cultures. In Staten Island diversity is important becuase their are vast amounts of people from different countries therefore they must have diversity appreciation for the people coming into the US. Also these people are different some cultures dislike other cultures so if diversity appreciation can be achieved then appreciation for all cultures and friendship will be attained.
The first step that Staten Island took to help with cultural diversity is the non profit organization NYCID and they work at high schools and other places to help with the integration of cultures in high schools this helps with school violence. They also help with running mediation centers to help with communication between people and it helps to resolve conflicts non violently.
Diversity appreciation is important at westminster because we have vast amounts of different cutltures. If westminster does not have diversity at westminster we have nothing because without diversity there is no communication or integration among people. Steps that we can have at westminster to help integration among the domestic and foreign students is that we could have a seminar about diversity and help bring the different types of people together.

Bob Dylan and Blowin in the Wind released on his 1963 album The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. Although it has been described as a protest song, it poses a series of questions about war, peace, and freedom. In 1999, Blowin in the Wind was ranked #14 on Rolling Stone's top 500 songs of all time. Blowin in the Wind is a timeless song about injustices in the world and Dylan sang the song to bring these injustices to the mind of the people.

This song is the perfect contemporary broadside ballad because it presents people with problems facing them at that point in time. It allows them to hear the song from a professional singer and song writer. It also shows people that everyone faces the same problems and that no one is different. This song is considered a broadside ballad because it tells people about injustices facing America and that they must stand up for these injustices.
I personally think that broadside ballads are a perfect way to raise awareness for injustices facing the world. Especially, a song by Bob Dylan because if Bob Dylan cares so much about the injustices then they must be a huge problem facing the world. I also think that broadside ballads are a musically sound way to bring people together to face important problems.

Blog Assignment two
In this blog, the broadside ballad of "This land is your Land" by Woody Guthrie is what will be looked at to find what the ballad is about, and who are the listeners suppose to be. Broadside Ballads are songs which spark feelings in people about something political that needs to be changed. In this ballad by Woody Guthrie, I feel that he is speaking about the inequalities that people have between each other. When he talks about the trespassing sign to keep people out I feel this is what he is referring too. Broadside Ballads spark emotioms and help to sometimes cause poltical change by getting people aware of what is going on.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaI5IRuS2aE This is the link for "This Land is Your Land" by Woody Guthrie. Some facts about Woody Guthrie can be found here: http://www.woodyguthrie.org/biography/biography1.htm. Some quick facts about Guthrie are that he was born July 14th, 1912. His full name is Woodrow Wilson Guthrie. He was married three times. He was also born in Oklahome around the time of the Dust bowl and the Great Depression, so he left Oklahoma and travelled to California. Many of his songs were about the hatred for people like Guthrie and why they were treated badly when they got to California. He also wrote songs about being against Facism after WWII. This song addresses the problem of unequality about how people arent equal. Some people have alot and fence it in and others have nothing and are kept out by those fences.
This song is a very iconic tune that everyone knows. I never knew it was a broadside ballad, but after listening to it you can see the message that it conveys. This ballad can even be relevent today such as how people in the United States take advantage of what they have especially when there are people less fortunate and dont have anything. This song really could open peoples eyes because it could be written today and people would still listen to it.

Blog Assignment One
The purpose of this blog is to talk about broadside ballads such as "Political Songs" by Pete Seeger and "We are Soldiers in the Army" by the Freedom Singers. The purpose of Broadside ballads are for the singer or composer of the song to get a political message or a message about the populations discontent across. I am taking this class for the purpose to graduate college. This is my last semester at Westminster and I need this class to graduate. I hope to learn more about music i general and possibly learning more about the history of music throughout history in people's struggles.
The person I chose to write about is Joe Glazer. Joe Glazer was an active member in many unions and he wrote and sang songs about workers rights for good wages, 8 hour working days, and better working conditions. Joe was nicknamed " the Laborer's troubador" for his fight for workers rights. Joe made many contributions to the workers rights movement by in 1979, Glazer invited 14 other labor musicians to the to share musical and written compositions, and to discuss the effective use of music, song, poetry and chants in labor activism. The three-day event became an annual one, becoming known as the Great Labor Arts Exchange or (GLAE). Over the next five years, the concept of "labor culture" and how the labor movement and the arts interacted which Glazer and others held expanded. Therefore, Glazer did alot for workers rights when it came to his music. To learn more about Joe Glazer go to: http://www.folkways.si.edu/explore_folkways/joe_glazer.aspx . The song that Joe Glazer sang that impacted me most would have to be "Down in a Coal Mine" and you can find this at http://www.folkways.si.edu/albumdetails.aspx?itemid=3233 . The primary political interest that Joe Glazer fought for through song is workers rights. This can be shown in "Down in a Coal Mine" very well by the way its very discriptive and makes you really feel like you could be down there with the men working in the coal mine. Joe is sending the message that these coal miners need a union to fight for better working environment (better safety), better hours, and more pay.
I was drawn to Joe Glazer because the workers movement is a very crucial one throughout American History. Workers were what built the United States into what it is and they should have rights and not be taken advantage of and this is what made me choose Joe Glazer. He was a crucial step in the Labor movement by voicing the opinions of so many workers when they couldn't speak for fear of loosing their jobs. Joe Glazer is a man that really reminds me of myself because we both say whats on our mind even when people don't want us to speak our minds. This is another reason why Joe Glazer really stuck out to me.
